On Thursday 9th December Frontline History visited Unity with their amazing array of First World War artefacts. They ran two sessions for our GCSE students to support their studies of medical advances during the war. Their expertise and fabulous dad jokes had us all engaged for the two hours sessions which just flew by. We were able to try on helmets, gas masks, clothing and kit which fit some of the year 10 students surprisingly well. The students were also able to handle weapons including a rifle, pistol, grandes and bayonets. We all decided that we would not want to be involved in a gas attack as just the smell was dreadful and one year 11 definitely regretted volunteering when he got to hold the urine bucket. The students thought it was really interesting and useful with many staying back at the end of the session to ask extra questions.
What the students had to say:
'Seeing the different gas masks being adapted over time to combat different gases was really fascinating'
'It was really helpful to know the whole process injured soldiers went through'
'Passing stuff around was awesome'
'We learned a lot about weapons and medicine'
We are really looking forward to their next visit.
A great learning experience for all!
