Our prospective Year 7 students, currently Year 6, took part in our induction day last Monday.
The students took part in regular day to day lessons in order to get a glimpse of what life here at Unity Academy will be like when they start in September.
Many students are coming to Unity this Year, All spread from various different primary schools across Blackpool. These include Norbreck, Devonshire, Boundary, Layton, Claremont, Moor Park, Revoe, Kincraig, Bispham Endowed and Stanley, as well as some of our very own Unity primary pupils making the step up to secondary education.
Being in a brand new school environment, especially when starting secondary school, can often be very daunting for children. However, here at Unity, we always work together to ensure all new students are welcomed and given the peace of mind in that Unity is a great, friendly place to be.
To begin the day, students were welcomed into our Academy by our Principal, Chris Lickiss, who welcomed the children into our family, outlined what we are all about and importantly explained how, In Unity We Succeed.
The students were also introduced to their form tutors and had time in their forms to get to know all of their fellow classmates by doing fun exercises which encouraged the students to interact with one another.
Music quickly became a huge hit with a lot of the children. With the excellent new facilities at hand, the children were able to work on keyboards to quickly learn one of the latest top 10 chart hits, which some even performed in front of the class to conclude the lesson!
Food Technology had students making a couscous salad to take home at the end of the day! Many of the children had a natural talent for food preparation and some even found themselves helping other students in preparing their salad too!
Even on Induction Day our motto was in evidence ‘In Unity We Succeed.’
Experiments were aplenty in our science department! Safety goggles on and bunsen burners lit! A few simple experiments were carried out by the pupils, to show and teach the students what happens when you dissolve calcium in water. The task was to observe the experiment and investigate what gas is produced, and how they can test for it. These practical elements in science helped students learn and understand better, so they could relate what they had learnt to the afternoon’s activities.
Reactions were hugely positive and fun was had by all. Each student spoken to stated how they could not wait to start here at Unity, and as a newly formed Academy, we are proud to have so many pupils choosing us for their next step in learning.
With lots of brand new facilities, and more construction work to be done over summer, there has never been a better time to choose Unity Academy Blackpool for the education of children in the north of Blackpool.
